How to Remove Rust from Cast-Iron Tool Surfaces: Step-by-Step Guide

Have you just bought some old tools that need a little love. Maybe they have sat in someone’s garage and accumulated a little rust. Well in this tutorial I will show you how to remove rust and bring back the shine to any of our metal tool surfaces. And guess what, its easy and affordable and takes no time at all. Guide

Step 1: Spray the surface with WD-40

Time: 5 m

PPE: Safety Glasses, Disposable Gloves

To remove rust from you work surface, we must first spray your work surface with WD-40 and let it sit for up to 5 minutes.

Step 2: Sand the surface

Time: 20 m

PPE: Safety Glasses, Disposable Gloves

Start wet sanding the surface with 150-180 Grit sand paper. As you wet sand the WD-40 will start to getting gross, so make sure to wipe the surface dry with the paper towel and respray WD-40 between sessions.

Once your happy with 150-180 Grit, move to 220-240 Grit, and then 320 Grit, and then 400 Grit, repeating the process of wiping and respraying with WD-40.

Note: When sanding move in the same direction. This will help prevent swirls or a scratchy looking surface

Step 3: Apply the Rust Protectant

Wipe the surface of the tool completely dry, then sparingly spray the rust protector on the worksurface. Rub in the spray using a paper towel ensuring the full surface is protected.
